Nei primi anni settanta si respirava un'aria post-hippye, post-figli dei fiori che è difficile raccontare a chi non li ha vissuti. Erano gli anni in cui i giovani occidentali andavano a cercar sé stessi in India, magari compiendo l'intero viaggio su una 2CV. Erano gli anni in cui eravamo consapevoli di essere una generazione "diversa" e in cui eravamo sicuri che il mondo stesse cambiando.
Ci sono alcune copertine (non mi riferisco necessariamente alla musica, ma proprio alle copertine) che nella mia opinione centrano molto quell'atmosfera early seventies - dopo la summer of love delle copertine di Jimi Hendrix e Cream e prima della new wave.

I Cheap Trick sono un quartetto dell’Illinois dedito negli anni settanta a una musica fra heavy metal bubblegum e power pop: qualche cosa di venuto dopo Suzy Quatro e venuto prima dei Ramones. Perciò godettero di poca stima dalla critica e di disattenzione dal pubblico almeno fino alla imprevedibile esplosione di culto in Giappone dove invece i quattro furono venerati come una sorta di Beatles redivivi.

Proprio per il mercato giapponese registrarono l’anfetaminico live At Budokan (Epic 1979) che, straripato anche in occidente, vendette la bellezza di tre milioni di copie e non senza una ragione perché si tratta di un ingenuo quanto potente album che suona proprio come il rock & roll dovrebbe (e che perciò vale la pena di procurarsi).

Anche se godettero ancora di qualche successo negli anni a venire non mi capitò più di sentirne parlare, tanto meno di comperare un loro disco, fino a che non ho inciampato in questi giorni in questo Sgt Pepper Live, registrato dalla band quest’anno in concerto con tanto di accompagnamento della New York Philarmonic Orchestra e di una Indian Sitar Band.

Se i giapponesi credevano i Cheap Trick la reincarnazione dei Beatles i quattro evidentemente ci hanno creduto se nell’album si presentano semplicemente con i nomi di battesimo (Rick, Bun, Robin & Tom) e se portano in concerto quel Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band che nemmeno i Fab Four eseguirono mai dal vivo…

La (buona) abitudine di suonare in concerto interi album credo sia stata inventata negli anni novanta dai Phish che in occasione dei concerti nella notte di Halloween proposero per intero l’album bianco dei Beatles, Quadrophenia degli Who così come Loaded dei Velvet Underground, The Dark Side Of The Moon dei Pink Floyd e Remain In Light dei Talking Heads. L’idea piacque e fu ripresa da altre band indie, fra cui i Gov’t Mule con la Houses Of Holy dei Led Zeppelin e poi The Dark Side Of The Moon (e altri pezzi) dei Pink Floyd.

Gli artisti originali stessi devono aver apprezzato l’idea se i Cowboy Junkies rifecero dal vivo il proprio The Trinity Session, Lou Reed Berlin, Van Morrison Moondance e Bruce Springsteen niente di meno che i primi cinque album (per ora).

I Cheap Trick non sono veramente i Beatles e Sgt Pepper Live non è veramente Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band; però il disco non è neanche troppo diverso. Gli arrangiamenti sono identici all’originale (con un ottimo lavoro della NY Philarmonica per riuscire nell’operazione che all’epoca fu considerata impossibile di portare quelle canzoni in concerto) e con un sacco di quell’energia che il rock & roll sprigiona più dal vivo e che in studio.

A cosa serve? A ridar vita a vecchi capolavori che non si ascoltano più che raramente; per quanto mi riguarda io non ascoltavo così tanto i Pink Floyd dal 1975 come invece li ho ascoltati dai Mule quest’estate.

Spesso i Cheap Trick sono così precisi nel riesumare le canzoni di Sgt Pepper che paradossalmente la voglia di togliere il loro disco e mettere l’originale è forte. Ma i quattro americani di Rockford giocano un jolly: subito dopo la fine di A Day In The Life invece di chiudere i giochi attaccano il medley del secondo lato di Abbey Road all’altezza di Golden Slumber e mentre il cuore mi si riempie di miele, la mia mente mi conferma quello che ho sempre saputo: che Abbey Road è più bello di Sgt Pepper!

The River ha avuto un ruolo importante nella mia vita. Mi ha accompagnato durante diversi momenti, diverse traversie, diverse compagne persino.
L'ho riascoltata l'altra sera mentre giravo a vuoto in auto nella notte. Ascoltavo Live In NYC ed a un certo punto è arrivato quel lungo lamento di sax che introduce la nuova versione della canzone. Stavo per mandare avanti, forse perché quella canzone significa troppo per me per poterla riascoltare, o magari perché avrei voluto sentire le versione introdotta dalla solita chitarra. Ma non ce l'ho fatta a cambiare, e così l'ho ascoltata una volta di più.
Non avevo mai realizzato che parlasse di un matrimonio finito. Ascoltiamo le canzoni modellandole sulla nostra esperienza, e per me il baricentro della canzone era:

La gente ha una fervida immaginazione e passando di bocca in bocca i fatti diventano leggende, fino a far diventare credibile l'incredibile. So cosa si dice di me: mi chiamano il Silver Surfer e qualcuno è convinto che io venga da un altro pianeta. Beh, quando passeggio lungo le strade di San Francisco anche a me, di tanto in tanto, viene ormai da pensare di venire da un altro pianeta. Non dal mondo di oggi, almeno. Vengo da una Terra di tanti anni fa dove ci sembrava di essere supereroi e che stessimo per cambiare il mondo. Vengo da Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco, in quegli anni in cui in business non aveva nulla a che fare non solo con la nostra musica ma nemmeno con la nostra vita. Nessuno pensava che i banchieri potessero ridurre Frisco a quella che è oggi - anche se a dire il vero già allora ad ogni Natale la TV trasmetteva It’s A Wonderful Life…
C’era eccitazione in quei giorni. All’incrocio fra Fillmore Street e la Geary c’era il Fillmore Auditorium di Bill Graham, ed era roba da tutti i giorni che suonassero Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Big Brother, Jefferson Airplane…
Io non facevo parte del giro dei gruppi, non sono mai stato capace di imparare a suonare una chitarra; ma avevo grandi amici comunque e la vita era Wonderful davvero.
Ricordo i più forti in città, quei fantastici quattro… non facevano nulla in particolare ma la loro porta era sempre aperta a chi bussava, e persino a chi volesse fermarsi a mangiare, a dormire, a vivere in casa. Erano una specie di grande famiglia, una moglie (anche se qualcuno la chiamava la donna invisibile) e tre mariti: filosofia hippie.
Non ricordo quando cominciarono a chiamarmi il surfer d’argento, deve essere per qualche cosa che combinai sulle spiagge giù a Monterey o a Santa Barbara, ma non ricordo: raramente eravamo sobri, e all’epoca giravano un sacco di allucinogeni, non se ne coglieva il pericolo e pensavamo invece che ci aiutassero a vedere oltre. Outside e inside…
Uno che l’aveva presa pesante con l’acido era DareDevil, ma si può capirlo. Era cieco come una talpa e solo con l’LSD vedeva il mondo a colori. E poi c’era questo tipo, Dr. Strange, non ne era mai a corto ed il denaro non sembrava essere un problema.
C’erano anche brutti ceffi, magari sotto sotto non cattivi ma che erano entrati troppo nel ruolo. Per esempio, Hulk, un gigante in giacca di pelle con stampato Hell’s Angels sulla schiena; in giro sul suo chopper pensava dovesse mostrarsi cattivo per forza, almeno fino ad Altamont… Se uno come Hulk si imbatteva in quello svedese, quello biondo con gli occhi azzurri, Thor, erano risse. Motociclisti… Non so se Thor si facesse, non ricordo di averlo mai visto attorno alle droghe, ma certo era ben fuori di suo. Comunque quando Hulk incontrò la sua metà (She Hulk la chiamammo) dovette vendere la Harley e non ebbe mai più il permesso di comperarne una.

Wonder Woman, chi non le è riconoscente? La donna più generosa del mondo, te ne faceva vedere di meraviglie. Credo sia stata lei a fare da nave scuola alla metà di noi, e non te ne faceva un problema se eri al verde. Il problema era non innamorarsene.
E quell’altro, il piedi piatti, sempre pronto a rompere i coglioni, Dr. Destino lo chiamavamo, perché era destino trovarselo di traverso quando meno ne avevi bisogno. Chissa che fine ha fatto e se ora è solo un innocuo pensionato con il problema di tirar sera.

Canterbury Fair

Emergono i primi dettagli della Canterbury Fair in programma per la prima settimana di luglio. Si tratterà di un mix fra una festa campagnola ed un ritrovo flower power in stile anni sessanta. Durante il giorno le strade della ridente cittadina del Kent saranno invase dagli artisti di strada, dai Triumph Bikers e dalle bancarelle di dischi usati e di abbigliamento vintage. Il cinema Mona Lisa ospiterà la rassegna dell'indie brit cinema, mentre l'Apollo proietterà non stop film di fantascienza degli anni cinquanta con titoli come The Day Of The Triffids. Nel pomeriggio nel Canterbury Park i turisti saranno allietati dalla musica bandistica della Sgt Pepper Lonely Heart Club Band, ma al crepuscolo prenderanno vita alternativamente due palchi posti ai due lati del parco. Il programma pare definito: per la prima sera il concerto di Hatfield and The North e Caravan, per la seconda National Health e Soft Machine. All'alba della domenica andrà invece in scena l'Hello Dawn Show dei Gong di Daevid Allen e Steve Hillage e per la serata conclusiva è previsto Tubular Bells in Concert condotto da Mike Oldfield e David Bedford.

Non è tutto per la parte musicale: per chi preferisce una birra al coperto al Banana Moon Pub andranno in scena gli spettacoli più intimi di Robert Wyatt e Kevin Ayers.
